About Tony Griffin
Born and raised in Ireland, Tony, currently on scholarship studying kinesiology at Dalhousie University in Halifax,
Nova Scotia, Canada. For the past six summers he has played Ireland’s national sport, Hurling, at the highest level
possible; which for every young Irish boy, is a dream come true. Last year, he gave up the thrill of playing in front
of thousands of people per week to pursue another dream.
In December 2005 his father Jerome died, after a nine-month battle, from Lung Cancer. A non-smoker all of his life,
the doctors told us that he acquired cancer after long-term exposure to asbestos while working in the construction industry.
To honor his memory and to raise money and exposure for the Irish Cancer Society, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and
Ovarian Cancer Canada, Tony biked 7,500 km biked across Canada and Ireland.
Tony could not have done this without the team that supported him every step of the way. When heI was tired, his dear
friends Rob, Ben, and Matt took turns cycling in front of him. When his heart hurt, his mother, brother, and
sisters inspired him to pick his head up and think of others less fortunate. When his head hurt from thinking of all
that needed to be done, his friends Bruce, Todd, Travis, Annie, Krista, Janice, Eoin, Martin, Carolyn, Ashley, Haley, Ally and so
many more took the work off his plate and allowed Tony to concentrate on cycling. Tony met new friends on this journey and
everyone of them, is now a friend for life.
Tony firmly believe that, as human beings, we are merely scratching the surface in regards to what we are capable of.
We have more love, ability, and integrity simmering below the surface than is comprehensible. His mission in life is to
tell the world that you can have the life you want, you can wake up every morning excited to be alive and expectant
of abundant good. Above all else, inherent in each of us is the ability to do good, and ultimately make the world a
better place to live for our children.
