TGF Training Log: Introduction

Greetings TGFers!

I'm very excited to be contributing to Tony's latest adventure! As some of you may know, I helped to train Tony for his 7000 km Ride For Life in 2007. This work was based on my background as a Ph.D. in exercise science, where I was a professor in Tony's School of Health & Human Performance at Dalhousie from 1998-2007 (I have now taken up a Canada Research Chair position at Brock University). At the same time, I have been a passionate cyclist since entering university in 1986. Since that time, I've commuted, raced, officiated, switched career directions, and met my wonderful wife thanks to the bike! Since 2002, I have also been the Sport Science & Training Editor for the pro cycling website www.pezcyclingnews.com.

In this continuing series of articles, I will aim to guide you in developing a basic training plan that will help to get you from Halifax to Austin as comfortably as possible. We will also survey some of the major issues in training, sport science, sports nutrition, etc. to keep you rolling. Lastly, I will try to go through many of the other tips and tricks that I have picked up along the way.

For those of you completely new to the bike, welcome! You're sure to become addicted to the thrill of life on two wheels! For those experienced cyclists, hopefully these articles will get you thinking about the bike in a new and interesting way..........Let's get rolling!
